As a Black woman, SheaMoisture was always a staple in my household growing up. It was the go-to brand for textured hair that met multiple needs. Last year, during an annual trip where beauty editors preview what’s to come for the following year, the brand announced it was releasing a collection of products focused on bond repair. I was ecstatic. It was the ultimate need for my textured hair that has been manipulated for years and now experiences a lot of damage and breakage. Bond-repair products and hair masks have been trending for a few years, and I’ve tried a bunch.
What is it?
The SheaMoisture Bond Repair collection includes six reparative and strengthening products: a cleansing shampoo, a strengthening conditioner, a moisturizing masque, a frizz control leave-in-conditioner, a heat protectant, and a lustrous-finish oil. Each product is formulated to build stronger curls and coils by replenishing and restoring hair bonds and damaged proteins.
Lacy Redway, a celebrity hairstylist who regularly works with textured hair, says, “If you’re someone who loves to constantly switch up your style, it’s important to set a healthy foundation for your hair. Whether it’s braids, weaves, wigs, wash-and-gos, or heat styling, constant manipulation can lead to damage and breakage.” She suggests using a bond repair like SheaMoisture’s because it includes a complex bond that creates 84 percent less breakage and six times stronger hair. “The bond-repair collection is uniquely designed to address hair-loss frustrations from breakage experienced by those with type-3 and -4 textured hair.”
Do I need this?
If you have textured hair, whether natural or processed like mine, there is definitely a product or two in the collection that would benefit you.
The Minoxidil was the first product in the collection that became a part of my daily hair routine. I’ve experienced hair loss around my edges, and I’ve turned to almost every hair-growth product on the market. Minoxidil is notoriously hard to buy on beauty shelves and more of a prescription-based product. It’s a topical solution that stimulates growth and slows balding. I’ve been using the bond collection’s 2 percent Minoxidil topical solution consistently for about six months and I no longer find myself balding on my edges. Minoxidil can be drying, so I always make sure to keep my scalp and hair extra moisturized with oils.
Not only do I use the products on my hair, I also use it on weaves. Earlier this month, while in New Orleans with SheaMoisture, I wore big curly hair, a new style for me and one that often frizzes up the instant it meets a humid climate. (Side note: New Orleans was the ultimate destination to test the products in.) I made myself a hair cocktail: the leave-in conditioner mixed with the bonding oil. It left my weave frizz-free and shiny while also leaving my hair shiny with no signs of breakage.
How can I get it?
The bond collection is available at multiple retailers including Amazon, and the oil repair masque and the reparative leave-in conditioner are almost 30 percent off during Prime Day 2024. The masque is one of Redway’s favorite products from the collection because of how it deeply hydrates and strengthens hair. The leave-in conditioner has become my best friend this summer with my big curly hair. It’s lightweight enough to not weigh hair down, but rich enough to repair hair visibly. Curly girls, add it to your Amazon Prime Day cart.
