2024 Emmy nominations: ‘Shogun,’ ‘The Bear,’ ‘Only Murders’ score more than a score each

After two straight years of HBO’s “Succession” outperforming every other program in terms of Emmy nominations, a new leader emerged in 2024. With the reigning Best Drama Series winner having signed off, TV academy voters turned their attention to FX’s “Shōgun.” They showered its inaugural season with a whopping 25 bids, thus making it the first new show since 2020’s “Watchmen” to top this annual ranking.

In second place (and first among continuing comedies) is FX’s “The Bear,” which earned 23 mentions for its sophomore season and now has a lifetime total of 36. It also broke the record for most single-year nominations for a comedy series, which previously belonged to “30 Rock” (22 in 2009).

Third time was the charm for “Only Murders in the Building,” which earned 21 nominations; that’s almost double its haul last year (11 bids) and outpaces the 17 citations it picked up for its premiere season.

The top performing show from a traditional broadcast network is NBC’s “Saturday Night Live,” which added 17 bids to its previous 48-year haul of 315. Next in that subset is ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” with nine mentions for its third season.

Below is a scorecard of the 16 programs that earned double digit nominations for the 2024 Emmys. Nomination tallies for past seasons are included for comparison where applicable.
