Experts slugfest: Breaking down the 2024 Emmy nominations snubs and surprises

“Shōgun” and “The Bear” dominated the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards nominations as anticipated — but not that much. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss all the nomination surprises and snubs.

“Shōgun” led all shows with 25 nominations, affirming its status as the drama series to beat. But the FX epic didn’t clean up as much as it could have, missing a Best Drama Actor bid for Cosmo Jarvis and the Best Drama Supporting Actress lineup entirely. It also only got one episode from its six (over-)submissions into Best Drama Directing, which is a blessing in disguise since triple nominations could’ve led to a vote-split. How did it come up short in these places?

With 23 nominations, “The Bear” set a new record for most bids for a comedy series, eclipsing “30 Rock’s” 22 in 2009. But the reigning Best Comedy Series champ didn’t max out on acting nominations as forecasted either. It only claimed two, instead of the predicted four, slots in Best Comedy Supporting Actor and Liza Colón-Zayas made it into Best Comedy Supporting Actress without Abby Elliott. But without Elliott there, could Colón-Zayas be the one to stop a Hannah Einbinder win for “Hacks”?

Elsewhere, we discuss the rather chalk limited categories, sans the chaos in supporting, and the over-performances by “Slow Horses,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Palm Royale” and… “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty”?
