Cleaning up Montgomery County after storm

After heavy rain and wind, parts of Montgomery County have experienced significant storm damage. NEWS10's Anthony Krolikowski went out to the village of Ames and hamlet of Glen to see how the communities were cleaning up.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -After heavy rain and wind, parts of Montgomery County have experienced significant storm damage. NEWS10's Anthony Krolikowski went out to the village of Ames and the hamlet of Glen to see how the communities were cleaning up.

 A majority of the trees in Ames had branches snapped off onto the ground, closing a section of Latimer Hill Road. Mayor James "Tom" Kilcullen says that earlier on Wednesday morning, telephone poles were still in the road. He has not seen a storm this bad in the 30 years he's lived in the village. 

"National Grid is putting up some new poles and trying to reattach the powerlines. So once that is all done, if it's done today, the road will be back open," stated Tom.

Also happening in the county, Glen has seen storms on and off since Tuesday. One family in the historic district says they thought lightning had struck their home when it was actually a tree.

"It was just like the hugest shaking home boom and I felt the beam hit me on this shoulder," described Erin Breglia.

An american basswood tree tore through the living room of the Breglia home and left no part unscathed. The house was once the historic Glen Grange. "I heard my wife go, "Aaaagh!" And it was about ten minutes, fifteen minutes later the storm had rolled through it almost missed us," said Fred Breglia.

Everyone did make it out of the house, including the family dog Max, who was also almost hit by a beam. "Glass hit us, it cut our nose, it cut her nose. The shrapnel from the light bulbs and the glass," explained Fred.

The Breglia's say they've spent thirteen years in this home without any sort of storm damage. In that time, they have made many memories and are not letting the damage get them down. Erin and Fred say making it out of the home alive is all that matters and are working with insurance to rebuild as the tree is being taken away.
