Police officer on trial for rape

A police officer has been suspended as he faces a criminal trial for charges related to domestic violence and raping his wife, it emerged on Thursday.

His wife reported him earlier this month where he was remanded in court and held in custody since, a police spokesperson confirmed to the Cyprus Mail.

“This is a case of domestic violence, we cannot say much. He was suspended immediately and a disciplinary investigation is underway.”

According to Reporter, the case been sent to Nicosia’s criminal court for trial with an order he is held in custody.

The reason cited is fear he may influence his wife or another witness.

Nonetheless, the officer appealed the decision. Court will announce its own decision at a later date.
