IND vs SL: Suryakumar Yadav To lead in T20Is; KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer Return For ODIs

BCCI have announced India squad for the upcoming white ball series against Sri Lanka. India star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been given rest due to his work load management.

New Delhi: Surkumar Yadav has been selected as captain for T20I series against Sri Lanka. The BCCI has announced India squads on Thursday, July 18, for upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka, the series will mark Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment as team India’s head coach. Players like Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul also returned into the ODI side. Rohit Sharma will return in ODIs for the series against Sri Lanka, with Virat Kohli also making a comeback in the fifty-over format.

In a strategic move, Suryakumar Yadav, who previously captained the T20I team during India’s away series against South Africa, returns to lead once more. His tenure saw success amidst Rohit Sharma’s absence post a demanding ODI World Cup. Meanwhile, Hardik Pandya, earlier sidelined from captaincy due to fitness concerns, makes a notable return to the T20I squad.

Shubman Gill, now the vice-captain for both T20Is and ODIs, showcased his leadership prowess as India’s second-string side triumphed convincingly over Zimbabwe, securing a commanding 4-1 series win. Adding firepower to the squad is Sanju Samson, the power-hitting deputy in the Zimbabwe series, who earns a spot in the upcoming white-ball tour against Sri Lanka.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shivam Dube, Rinku Singh, and Riyan Parag retain their positions for the Sri Lanka T20I series, underscoring their continued impact. However, despite strong performances, Ruturaj Gaikwad misses out on the T20I squad, while Jaiswal earns his maiden ODI call-up, highlighting the selectors’ strategic planning for future competitions.

In the bowling department,  Mohammed Siraj and Axar Patel made a return to T20Is, with Ravi Bishnoi, Washington Sundar and Khaleel Ahmed all retaining their places from the Zimbabwe tour.
