Louise Bailey, the founder of Beauty Club London, is no stranger to haircare as she runs a high-end extensions salon.

Bailey’s tips have travelers covered, even at the hottest beach getaways.

She addressed the role that sea, sand, and sun can play when it comes to hair.

The pro also advised ways to keep locks healthy while staying worry-free on vacation.

THE RULES

Bailey pointed out five major rules for keeping hair healthy in the summertime.

“Don’t forget the sun protection,” she said.

She added that dermatologists have realized the sun can hurt hair about as much as it does skin.

“It turns out that your hair is just as susceptible to sun damage as your skin,” she said.

“Research has found that frequent exposure to UV light decreases hair lipids.

“These are the fatty acids that help make up the structure of your hair, so when these are broken down, hair feels more brittle, dry and frizzy.”

Bailey offered a solution — hair sunscreen.

“If you’re looking for a sunscreen to use on your hair, be cautious of products that list Avobenzone an ingredient as this can alter the color of your hair and extensions,” she said.

For those with color-treated hair, she recommended opting for a hat while in the sun.

OVER-PROTECTIVE

Bailey said that how you wear your hair can make all the difference.

She added that protective hairstyles can also keep tresses safe.

“A protective hairstyle will help restrict the movement of your hair and prevent it from becoming a dry, tangled mess,” she said.

WASH ON, WASH OFF

For her third rule, she stressed the importance of a good rinse before and after swimming.

“Your hair is porous and will soak up chlorine and salt when swimming. However, these chemicals will leave your hair feeling brittle and dry,” she said.

“Rinsing your hair with clean water before you go for a swim will reduce its ability to soak up sea or pool water.”

THROW IT IN THE BAG

Bailey added that there’s a haircare must-have for beach bags and travel — leave-in hair conditioner.

“This will help maintain moisture levels and provide a protective barrier against environmental damage,” she said.

She recommended opting for one that suits specific needs and reapplying it when needed.

“This simple step can make a significant difference in keeping your hair soft, hydrated, and manageable,” she said.

MEAN CLEAN

Finally, she is always sure to give her scalp some tender love and care for enviable hair.

“Keeping your scalp clean and well-moisturized will prevent dryness and irritation,” she said.

“If you’re spending hours on the beach, you’re likely to have sand and salt build-up in your hair, too.

“When washing your hair, use a clarifying shampoo and lather in gentle, circular motions to remove a build-up of sand without irritating your scalp.”
