Law enforcement standoff ends in SW Topeka

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Dozens of law enforcement officers were called to a neighborhood in southwest Topeka Thursday afternoon where a standoff occurred.

27 News was told by a Shawnee County Sheriff's Deputy at the scene that deputies were called to the 2800 block of SW Indian Hills Road. A deputy spotted an individual with a warrant and tried to make contact. The individual then ran inside a home while another came outside armed with a gun.

Negotiations continued with the individuals inside the home until they exited without incident. Two people are in custody following this situation.

Witnesses say the standoff was chaotic for the multiple hours it took place.

"There was a period of time where everything was up in the air and you had no idea," Alex Burlew, a Topekan who witnessed the standoff said. "And cops were kind of just shuffling about. I don't know if they had seen him or if they were just trying to figure out where he was in the home. You think you live in the nice side of town where you wouldn’t get that kind of attention. That goes to show it can happen anywhere."
