Mason Greenwood’s Man Utd career OVER as striker joins Marseille in £52million transfer and club release brief statement

MANCHESTER UNITED have released a short 57-word statement confirming Mason Greenwood’s transfer to Marseille.

The 22-year-old touched down in France last night and has now penned a contract until 2029 in a deal that could be worth over £30million – just before United announced the £52m arrival of Leny Yoro from Lille.

The one-cap England forward will cost Ligue 1 giants Marseille an initial £27m plus £3.2m in add-ons.

United also have a 50 per cent sell-on clause included in the package.

The Red Devils have now announced his departure has been been completed with a brief statement on their website.

It read: “Mason Greenwood has left Manchester United and joined French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent transfer.

“The 22 year-old English forward, who spent last season on loan at Getafe in Spain, made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since making his debut in 2019.

“We wish Mason all the best in his future career.”

Greenwood, who Marseille revealed will wear No.10 in his official unveiling video, joined United’s development academy in Halifax, West Yorkshire, aged six.

He progressed through the ranks and made his senior debut in 2019 before becoming a first-team regular.

But Greenwood was suspended by the club in January 2022 before being charged nine months later of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour towards a woman.

He denied the claims, with all criminal charges eventually being dropped in February 2023.

Greenwood joined Spanish side Getafe on loan last season and he shone at the LaLiga outfit, winning their Player of the Year prize.

His displays there had a number of clubs across Europe chasing his services.

Greenwood was told he no longer had a future at Man Utd in a meeting with the club’s leadership team this month, and trained individually during pre-season.

Marseille moved quick to strike their deal – despite it being against the wishes of many fans who started a campaign called #GreenwoodNotWelcome.

Marseille mayor Benoit Payan has also openly opposed the move and said that he would lobby the club’s president Pablo Longoria to call it off.

But De Zerbi, who joined from Brighton, vowed to “defend Greenwood” if he joined.

De Zerbi previously commented: “Greenwood isn’t recruited yet so there isn’t much to say.

“He’s a champion, an international level player.

“I don’t know what happened, I’m not concentrating on private lives.

“When a player signs for the club, I consider him my child.

“Even if I can pull his ear in private, I will defend him publicly. My players are like my sons.”

Meanwhile, Greenwood will not have to wait long to make his return to England – and his hometown.

On August 3, Bradford-born Greenwood could be in action for Marseille in a friendly with Sunderland at League Two side Bradford City‘s Valley Parade.
