“The BCCI will continue to monitor player availability and participation in the upcoming domestic cricket season, 2024-25.” This is a direct message to India’s international players to continue competing in the domestic circuit even if they are not picked for the national team. It was included in the press release issued by the BCCI on Thursday, the same day that the country’s T201 and ODI teams for the tour of Sri Lanka were released.

Although the Duleep Trophy marks the start of the 2024–25 domestic season in September, the statement is essentially a mandate from the BCCI bearing the stamp of India’s new head coach Gautam Gambhir, who has made a point of emphasizing the importance of players participating in all three formats and developing their talents accordingly.

This monitoring is also a result of the issue surrounding the withdrawal of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the BCCI-contracted player list due to their decision to miss matches for their respective state teams.

Therefore, in addition to evaluating the players’ performance on the home circuit, the BCCI will also monitor whether or not international players have made themselves accessible for domestic competitions while they are not playing for India.

The subject was discussed during the selection committee meeting on Thursday, according to a report in Cricbuzz

The BCCI authorities reportedly spoke with both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli following speculations that they would not be available for the three-match ODI series during the Sri Lanka visit. As a result, the ODI team announced for the visit included Rohit and Kohli, who both announced their retirement from 20Is following the World Cup last month. But in an effort to limit workload, the board chose to give bowling leader Jasprit Bumrah a break.
