Red Aurora over the Dolomite Range Observed on May 10, 2024
Photographer: Alessandra MasiSummary Author: Alessandra Masi
Extraordinary auroras caused by an extreme solar storm occurred over the mid-latitudes of North America and Europe on the evening of May 10, 2024. The spectacular northern lights were even visible above southern Europe, as shown here, captured in the heart of the Dolomite range of northern Italy. Red colors are often associated with more intense solar activity and geomagnetic storms. These aurora result when particles composing the solar wind interact with oxygen at altitudes greater than 150 miles (240 km) above the Earth's surface.
