What exactly is logistics?

Put very simply, logistics is the movement of goods from Point A to Point  B and usually covers two functions: transportation and warehousing.

It’s an essential role and means everything from your supermarket shop to your latest Amazon buy gets to you on time and for an affordable price.

Despite 40 per cent of Brits recognising how essential the sector is, nine in ten have never considered a job in it.

Bethany Windsor, Programme Manager of awareness campaign Generation Logistics said: “The logistics sector has a lot to offer those looking for a new role, from career switchers to school leavers looking for their first steps into the world of work, to university graduates finding a career path post-degree, there’s a place in logistics for them.”

What types of jobs can I do in the logistics sector?

It’s a common misconception that logistics is only lorry driving or warehousing.

Whilst these skill sets are both crucial and valued, the sector offers so many other career routes: Digital Tech, Finance, and HR, to name just a few.

What kind of pay can I make in logistics?

The average pay for warehouse staff is £39,000 a year but senior managers in big businesses can pocket £70,000 or more.

Entry-level jobs pay from £22,000 upwards. HGV drivers earn between £35,000 and £60,000 depending on their qualifications and the type of freight they carry.

Drivers qualified to truck dangerous goods are paid a premium.

What skills do I need to work in logistics?

Logistics is all about teamwork so whatever your role, you need to be a team player and work well with others.

Organisation and time management are key to getting the right items delivered to the right place on time.

Of course, not everything goes to plan so it helps to be a proactive problem solver too.

As logistics depends on so many people working together, being personable and able to get on with people from all walks of life is a highly sought-after ability.
