Omid Mahdavi Majd, the prosecutor of Qeshm, Iran, has announced the closure of 25 shops that were rented out to Afghan migrants without valid residency documents.

Mr. Majd stated on Wednesday, July 18th, that renting properties and shops to migrants without documentation is prohibited.

According to the Young Journalists Club, the prosecutor of Qeshm mentioned that closing Afghan shops is part of an initiative to control and monitor the main markets in Dargahan, focusing on unauthorized foreign nationals.

Omid Mahdavi Majd emphasized that residents of Qeshm who rent property or homes to Afghans will be considered offenders and will face consequences.

Afghans constitute the largest population of foreign migrants in Iran.

Earlier, the Foreign Immigrants Affairs of Kermanshah Province announced restrictions on the movement, residency, and employment of Afghan migrants in 16 provinces.

East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan, Ardabil, Zanjan, Kurdistan, Kermanshah, Ilam, Lorestan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad, Gilan, Mazandaran, Sistan and Baluchestan, Hormozgan, and Hamadan are among the provinces where housing and employment for Afghans have been prohibited.

In May, 540 Iranian artists, lawyers, doctors, journalists, and civil society activists demanded an end to the harassment of Afghan migrants in Iran, citing Iran’s legal system as a significant barrier to migrant integration into society.

These voices underscore the ongoing challenges faced by Afghan migrants in Iran.
