Israeli Prime Minister makes surprise visit to Rafah in Southern Gaza

Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, made a surprise visit to southern Gaza and met with Israeli forces.

According to the Associated Press, Netanyahu stated that this trip was necessary for Israel to maintain control over the border areas of Gaza with Egypt.

The Prime Minister’s office shared images of Netanyahu’s meeting with Israeli soldiers in Rafah city on its social media page.

Netanyahu’s visit to this conflict-ridden Palestinian area comes just before his trip to Washington and his speech in the US Congress, aiming to demonstrate his victory over Hamas.

Reports from Gaza indicate severe destruction in the region after 9 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, approximately 39,000 people have been killed and over 80,000 injured due to Israeli attacks in the area.

The Prime Minister’s visit to Rafah city follows shortly after the controversial presence of Itamar Ben-Gvir, his far-right National Security Minister, at Al-Aqsa Mosque, a highly sensitive and sacred site.

This move by Ben-Gvir has raised concerns that it could disrupt months-long talks aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Gaza.
