Summer heat nears its peak Friday around Portland

Summer temperatures are on the rise as afternoon highs return to the low 90s on Friday.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Summer temperatures are on the rise as afternoon highs return into the 90s again on Friday. A KOIN 6 Weather Alert Day will go into place on Saturday as temperatures climb into the mid to upper 90s in Portland and the Willamette Valley.

Hazy conditions are also expected to increase throughout the weekend. Southerly winds will help push Oregon wildfire smoke closer to the Willamette Valley. Very little air quality impacts will be felt on Friday and Saturday in Portland, but hazy conditions will be noticeable all around the valley.

Afternoon highs will return to the upper 80s by Sunday with a few more clouds in the mix. This comes as Portland prepares to celebrate Pride this weekend. Temperatures will be slightly cooler for the parade Sunday morning and early afternoon.

The wildfire threat remains elevated as rain continues to be absent from the forecast. Excessive heat will build this weekend east of the Cascades. That's where the greatest risk of new fires starting and spreading is most elevated.
