Seven injured in explosion at Shia ceremony in Sar-e-Pol, Afghanistan

According to reports, seven individuals were injured in an explosion caused by a grenade blast during the Muharram ceremony at the Imamzadeh Yahya shrine in central Sar-e-pol province.

Local residents stated that an unidentified individual threw a grenade near the ceremony before sunset on Friday, July 19th.

As a result of this explosion, seven individuals were injured and were transferred to the provincial hospital.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet. However, typically, ISIS-Khorasan Province targets gatherings of Shia Muslims.

So far, the Taliban have not commented on this incident.

Restrictions and widespread opposition from the Taliban marked this year’s Ashura ceremonies. Taliban forces lowered Ashura flags, particularly in Kabul and Herat, and disrupted Shia religious rituals with violence.

According to the reports, this year during the Ashura, Taliban forces also recently detained seven protesters opposing the prevention of mourning ceremonies in Jabrail district.

The incident adds to the tensions surrounding this year’s Ashura ceremonies, which have faced significant restrictions and opposition from the Taliban across various provinces, particularly in Kabul and Herat.
