'Wasn’t supposed to be a documentary': Futuristic spoof 'Idiocracy' trends after RNC

A movie about future Americans being so stupid they water their plants with sports drinks trended on political X Friday because of the Republican National Convention.

Americans who search the 2006 film "Idiocracy" will be treated to a plethora of memes comparing RNC guest speaker Hulk Hogan to Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho, the fictional U.S. president/wrestler portrayed by former NFL Los Angeles Rams player Terry Crews.

"We're almost there, folks," wrote X commenter Steven Greenstreet. Added David Sirota, "Idiocracy is almost actualized."

"Idiocracy" tells the tale of a mid-level Army official (Luke Wilson) and a sex worker (Maya Rudolph) who are transported into a dystopian American future where courtrooms have been replaced by monster truck rallies and the Secretary of State is sponsored by Carl's Jr.

Wilson and Rudolph are tasked with saving future generations of American by convincing them an ongoing drought will end if they'd just stop putting a sports drink called Brawndo's on their crops and that water doesn't necessarily have to come from the toilet.

It's not a serious film and, at the time of its release, it was not a box office hit.

But the film enjoyed renewed celebrity Friday as Americans contemplated the implications of Hulk Hogan ripping off his own shirt in the middle of a convention to nominate Donald Trump, a convicted felon found guilty of cooking his books to pay off an adult movie star.

"Idiocracy wasn’t supposed to be a documentary," wrote Fred Wellman.

"This is Trumpism," wrote Chris Kavanaugh. "Idiocracy seemed a really hyperbolic movie the first time I seen it but it was actually too restrained."

"I'm going to need to rewatch Idiocracy to see what happens next," wrote X user Trey.

Added X user @turtlerancher66, "I would rather vote Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho than Trump any day."
