Oakland man charged in $30,000 robbery at bank ATM

The man had just deposited $11,000 when he was robbed of $30,000 in cash by the man at the ATM next to him.

OAKLAND — A suspect has been arrested and charged in connection with a $30,000 robbery at a bank ATM, according to court records.

The victim was robbed on March 29 at the Bank of America on Bancroft Avenue in East Oakland, police said. He reportedly told authorities that at around 8:45 a.m. he deposited $11,000 and was holding an additional $30,000 in a black garbage bag when he noticed the customer at the adjacent ATM glance at him.

The customer left, returned with a firearm and robbed him of the $30,000, police said.

The entire robbery was caught on security cameras, which helped them identify a 25-year-old suspect, police said. He was arrested at his Oakland home and charged on July 3 with one count of second-degree robbery and several counts of gun possession.

The man reportedly told police that he used a fake gun to rob the victim, and claimed the money he got away with was $5,000, significantly lower than the victim’s estimate. He remains jailed in lieu of $230,000 bail and is next due in court on Aug. 6, records show.
