60 cats rescued from Schenectady home

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Schenectady Police announced that 60 cats were rescued from a Campbell Avenue home following a welfare check on July 18. Care of the animals has been transferred to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society (MHHS).

On Thursday around 4:46 p.m., members of the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Department responded to the home on Campbell Avenue's 1800 block to check on the health of a resident. Upon arrival, deputies learned that the man was in need of medical attention and arranged for him to be taken to Ellis Hospital to be tended to.

Further investigation revealed that the man had dozens of cats living in the house. According to MHHS, 25 of the 60 cats have been removed and transported to the Humane Society for treatment.

MHHS says they will continue trapping efforts and monitor the situation in the coming days. The Sheriff's Office was assisted by Schenectady Police Animal Control, the Schenectady Fire Department, the Schenectady County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), and MHHS.
