Taylor spraying for mosquitoes following 2 positive West Nile virus samples

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The City of Taylor began spraying for mosquitoes Thursday evening and will continue through Saturday.

According to the city, Williamson County and Cities Health District (WCCHD) helped coordinate the truck-mounted mosquito spraying, which will occur at 9 p.m.

“The spraying is in response to the two positive West Nile virus samples collected in Taylor on July 9 and July 15,” the city said. “The samples were collected at trap sites near North Drive and T.H. Johnson and near East Third Street and Washburn.”

The city provided the maps below of the areas that will be sprayed.

In-Depth

In 2023, 35 mosquito trap samples returned positive for West Nile virus in Williamson County, with one human case of West Nile virus reported in the county during the year.

Symptoms of West Nile could include fever, head and body aches, a skin rash on the trunk of the body and swollen lymph nodes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The health department said people 50 and older and/or with compromised immune systems would be at a higher risk for severe symptoms. Symptoms could include stiffness, disorientation, coma, tremors, vision loss, paralysis, and in rare cases, death.
