Travis County tax offices closed Friday due to global tech outage

Travis County tax offices are closed Friday until at least 1 p.m. as a massive Crowdstrike outage impacts technology globally.

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Travis County tax offices are closed Friday as a massive outage caused by a faulty software update issued by CrowdStrike impacts technology globally.

"All our computers that are connected to the state computer system are down," said Bruce Elfant, Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar. "We're waiting for further guidance for when they may be up. And so we're not able to transact any registrations or title transfers. And this just isn't us, this is all over the state."

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles posted on X (formerly Twitter): "The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles has been impacted by the global technology outage. Many department systems and services are unavailable at this time. We are working to restore all services as soon as possible."

The Travis County Tax Office originally closed their offices until at least 1 p.m., but later said offices would be closed all of Friday and normal operations would resume Monday.

"All the people who tried to conduct business with us today are either going to come this afternoon or Monday so we can expect our lines to be longer until we work through the backlog of customers," Elfant said.

The Travis County Tax Office also said people trying to renew their state vehicle registration online may experience technical issues because of the outage.
