News and Notes for Friday, July 19th, 2024

The Guardians return from their all-star break, facing the Padres at 7:10pm EST, with Tanner Bibee and knuckleballer Matt Waldron facing off.

The Athletic’s Zack Meisel says it’s time for the Guardians to strike, as the trade deadline approaches. Interesting note that the team had a backup plan to acquire Aroldis Chapman in 2016 if the Andrew Miller deal fell through, another reminder that the team doesn’t particularly have any moral scruples when it comes to employing bad character guys if it benefits the organization enough.

The Guardians 2025 regular season schedule was released. Go ahead and circle which game you guess Travis Bazzana will debut in. They start with a nine-game road trip to give some extra time to complete renovations at Progressive Field. Some road trip highlights for people who enjoy seeing the Guardians in new stadiums include the Blue Jays and Nationals in May, the Giants and (Sacramento?) Athletics in June, the Cubs in July, and the Mets and Diamondbacks in August. It’s weird to me that again, like this season, end the season with a series against an AL West team (the Rangers) instead of an AL Central foe.

Jim Callis of MLB Pipeline liked the Guardians’ draft, as did Keith Law of the Athletic and Kiley McDaniel of ESPN.

All Guardians affiliates are set to resume play tonight, as well.
