Republican governor says 'miracle' made him backtrack on Trump and offer support

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, a conservative Republican, has held former President Donald Trump at arm's length, expressing skepticism with his personal character and claiming to have never voted for him. But, according to a new report, 2024 will be different.

Cox has now endorsed Trump and plans to vote for him in November — and his survival of the assassination attempt at his Pennsylvania rally last Saturday appears to have been a key factor, according to Politico.

“Mr. President, I know we have some differences and you probably don’t like me much," Cox wrote in a letter to Trump. "I am not writing this letter looking for a position in your Cabinet or a role on your team. But I have loved so many of your policies … [and] I have told everyone that you are going to win the state of Utah and you are going to win the presidency again.”

Cox went on to describe Trump's survival from the attack as a "miracle" and said that “I humbly submit that you — and I sincerely mean this — only you — can” be a unifying force for America.

The governor made these views public at a recent press conference, saying, “I am doing everything I can to help and support him. We will still have lots of disagreements, I’m sure, and we’ll still do everything we can to help the state of Utah and help the Republican Party be successful.”

All of this comes amid reporting that President Joe Biden is closer than ever to making a decision to bow out of the presidential race and allow another nominee, most likely Vice President Kamala Harris, to take over.

The attack on Trump was carried out by a young shooter named Thomas Crooks, who left the former president with an ear injury and killed firefighter Corey Comperatore.

Law enforcement has not yet established a motive, but there does not appear to be evidence of a political motive, as his family members are staunch Republicans and he reportedly also was tracking Biden alongside Trump.
