‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ get sincere in final trailer — with a surprise appearance from an old friend
The first two “Deadpool & Wolverine” trailers emphasized the sarcastic and profane humor associated with Ryan Reynolds’ irreverent antihero, but Marvel is going sincere for the new one. The final trailer for Wade Wilson and Logan’s (Hugh Jackman) team-up, which arrives in theaters next week, is a heartstring-tugger emphasizing Logan’s emotional journey — which includes an appearance from someone very important to Logan in a different part of the multiverse.
The trailer reveals that Dafne Keen reprises her “Logan” role of Laura, a.k.a. X-23, in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” X-23 is the mutant girl who the Logan from the “X-Men” movies’ part of the multiverse transported across the country to safety before he died in “Logan,” the Oscar-nominated 2017 film was originally supposed to be Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine swan song.
The “Deadpool & Wolverine” version of Logan is from a universe where he’s not a hero, and has to be convinced to become one. X-23 is there to help, by telling this Logan who her Logan was.
“Whoever you think I am, you got the wrong guy,” Logan says in the trailer.
X-23 — grown-up now, thanks to Logan saving her life when she was a kid — turns around and answers, “You were always the wrong guy — ‘til you weren’t.”
She must help convince him, because in the (edited together) exchange that closes out the trailer, Deadpool asks Logan if he’s ready.
“F–- yeah I’m ready,” Logan replies. “I’m the Wolverine.”
“Deadpool & Wolverine” is the first Marvel movie to star characters developed by Fox before Disney bought the studio, and represents the integration of those characters into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s the first R-rated Marvel Studios movie, and the only MCU movie coming out this year. It’s directed by Reynolds’ frequent collaborator Shawn Levy.
In addition to Reynolds and Jackman, “Deadpool & Wolverine” stars Emma Corrin as baldheaded baddie Cassandra Nova and Matthew Macfadyen as Time Variance Authority agent Mr. Paradox. Jennifer Garner will reprise her role of Elektra, her “Daredevil” character, for the first time since 2005 in a special appearance.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” opens in theaters on July 26.
