Cyprus, British forces hail firefighting collaboration

Collaborative firefighting efforts between Cyprus and British forces were praised Friday in a news release from the British bases.

The statement included comments from Minister for Agriculture Maria Panayiotou and Sovereign Base Marshal Peter Squires.

This summer has already witnessed 13 major fires in Cyprus – higher than the seasonal average. These fires follow a dry winter and record temperatures since June.

As a result, fire-fighting demands have exceeded previous years. Since the first major fire in April, the Fire and Rescue Service have worked alongside crews from RAF Akrotiri on a weekly basis to fight the blazes.

Panayiotou praised the collaboration between British and Cypriot forces. “We have recently witnessed the benefits of such cooperation and are committed to leveraging our collective expertise,” she said.

She also highlighted the contributions from neighbouring countries, including Jordanian helicopters dispatched in May.

“By working together, we are stronger, more resilient and can more effectively combat the devastating impact of fires,” she added.

Marshal Squires expressed a similar sentiment, saying, “By working together, we are stronger, more resilient, and can more effectively combat the devastating impact of fires.”

In addition to these remarks, the release also made a public safety plea as hot, dry weather continues.

“Given the very little rain and record temperatures this year, the general public must take extra precautions to prevent fires and ensure safety,” said station manager Aristos Aristeidou.

Precautions include avoiding open flames, clearing dry leaves and keeping water nearby during barbecues.

“Almost nine out of ten fires are caused by human activities, so let’s all be more mindful to prevent these preventable disasters,” he concluded.
