Troy Fire Department receives new equipment

The Troy Fire Department has new equipment to keep firefighters and the community safe.

TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The Troy Fire Department has new equipment to keep firefighters and the community safe. It's part of an almost $130,000 federal award that was approved in 2023.

Fire officials said more funding is necessary as the department grows.

"We put on 28 new firefighters over the last few years," Deputy Fire Chief Jared Barringer said. "A portion of that Safer grant has helped pay for anything from training to EMT school and the equipment that they need. Those are large dollar items that bring us up to almost full staff at this point."

The department is using the money to buy helmets as well as washers and dryers that can clean their equipment of carcinogens after fires.
