Credit card skimmer found at Dollar Tree off Evangeline Thruway in Lafayette

The customer had trouble inserting their card into the machine, causing them to peel back the skimming device.

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY)-- A customer found a credit card skimmer at the Dollar Tree off of Evangeline Thruway earlier this week.

The customer had trouble inserting their card into the machine, causing them to peel back the skimming device.

"These devices are fitting over it. Of course, they're made to seem as though it's part of the machine," Better Business Bureau President and CEO Chris Babin said. "I feel like if you actually take time to look at the quality of the machine, you could probably figure out that a device is on there."

News 10 spoke to store management who told us they check their registers every day and have not found any skimmers.

Lafayette Police told News 10 that the incident was reported and is under investigation.

"If you come across a device you believe is a skimmer, and you just kind of back out of the transaction and leave, no telling what might happen behind you with multiple people checking out," Babin said. "You tell the business; hopefully they take action. But what if they don't? Why not be confident If you actually had your card inserted? You could potentially be a victim of that scam. So, notify law enforcement and make sure that the authorities here in Acadiana know about it."
