Sports briefs: Pacifics drop first game against Bakersfield

The top of the Pecos League Pacific Division standings got a bit tighter as the first-place San Rafael Pacifics fell to second-place Bakersfield, 5-0, at Albert Park on Thursday night.

The Pacifics (29-17) saw their lead trimmed to three games by the Train Robbers (25-19). The two teams were set to face off again on Friday night at Albert Park.

Bakersfield pitcher Joe Riddle pitched a four-hit ,complete-game shutout to take the win. Riddle didn’t allow a Pacifics base runner past second base.

San Rafael starter Alex Valasek took his first loss of the season despite scattering six hits and striking out 10 with no walks over eight innings. Only one of the five runs he allowed was earned.

The Pacifics have dropped four of their past five games with the one victory coming on Wednesday night — a 4-1 road win against Marysville (25-21), which sits in third place.

Golf

Peacock Gap Golf Club will host the third annual San Rafael City Championship on July 20-21. The 36-hole stroke play event will two scratch flights, (Men’s and Seniors Championship), and three net flights (Men, Women, and seniors).

Pickleball
