Trump's RNC diatribe is 'searing reminder' ex-president is 'unwell' mentally: conservative

Donald Trump’s meandering, convoluted and seemingly eternal speech closing out the Republican National Convention Thursday night wasn’t just evidence he’s unfit to lead the nation a second time, but the ramblings of someone suffering from serious mental illness, The Atlantic’s Tom Nichols writes.

In the wake of his near-assassination, Trump had the opportunity to show a different side of himself and sway undecided voters to his camp. But instead of sticking to talking points about "unity," Trump went mostly off-script as he delivered the longest acceptance speech on record, which included musing on how the human ear can bleed and how he wants to “buy” votes.

The diatribe was, “a searing reminder that Trump is a vengeful autocrat with obvious mental deficits who has surrounded himself with a crew of vicious goons,” Nichols writes.

And while evidence of Joe Biden’s age has prompted Democrats to push for him to bow out of the race, Nichols warns that “Trump is mentally and emotionally unwell,” and “these are not comparable problems.”

Political science professor Robert E. Kelly wrote on X that the media owe Biden an apology.

“Can we now have 3 weeks of intense speculation on Trump’s mental health, plus endless calls for him to quit?” Kelly wrote on X. “Biden is literally owed that by any standard of fair play or equal treatment.”

“Donald Trump is dangerously insane, corrupt, and stupid,” remarked Jeff Timmer, a former executive director of the Michigan Republican Party. “He is the greatest threat The United States has ever faced. I mean that.”

GOP strategist Mike Murphy agreed.

“I really don’t think Trump has the mental/intellectual rigor to distinguish between fact and fiction,” Murphy posted to X Friday. “He creates this avalanche of lies and then believes it because it feeds his massive ego and bottomless pit of insecurities. It’s bonkers. And dangerous. #Moron”
