Here’s the full list of all Boots stores shuttering this summer
The chain pharmacy has already closed doors at more than 245 branches so far of an expected total of 300.
One of the UK’s most iconic and instantly-recognisable pharmacy chains is set to shut down more than 300 of its branches as part of a massive cost-cutting exercise this summer.
Walgreens Boots Alliance, the US parent company of Boots, said in a financial statement last June they would be closing ‘up to 650’ outlets within the following 12 months, the Mirror reports.
The plans are a little behind the initially-envisioned schedule, but more 245 stores have already been shut down, with the remaining few due to close doors by the end of the summer.
The cost-cutting drive is expected to save the firm up to £618 million.
Tim Wentworth, CEO of Walgreens Boots Alliance, said: ‘We continue to face a difficult operating environment, including persistent pressures on the US consumer and the impact of recent marketplace dynamics, which have eroded pharmacy margins.
Our results and outlook reflect these headwinds, despite solid performance in both our international and US healthcare segments.’
He added: ‘Informed by our strategic review, we are focused on improving our core business: retail pharmacy, which is central to the future of healthcare.
‘We are addressing critical issues with urgency and working to unlock opportunities for growth.’
Boots remains one of the country’s most iconic and well-known pharmacy brands, with roots going way back to 1849.
The group currently also operates internationally in countries that include the Republic of Ireland, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Malta and Thailand.
Walgreens bought a 45% stake in the firm in 2012, going on to purchase the remaining 55% in 2014.
There have been previous cut-backs to its operations in the years since, with the company announcing the closure of 200 stores in May 2019 and the axing of 4,000 jobs in July 2020.
