Shoppers who spotted the price difference responded on social media.

One mum said: “Anyone seen these in any local Aldi in Glasgow. I bought my son the bag and lunch box but couldn’t get the bottle.”

Another mum said: “I got the Aldi lunchbox like that. I’ll have to go back and try and get the bottle.”

And a shopper said: “That is just perfect.”

Another shopper said: “They have them in Asda for £3.”

And a woman posted: “B&M are doing for £3 on plastic bottles in the back to school section.”

A recent review by The Independent found that the best water bottles for children were the Thermos funtainer bottle, (£19) the Tum Tum flip top water bottles (£8.99) , the B.Box Tritan drink bottle strawberry shake (£14.99) and the Zwilling bottle (£15.95.)

A study of 2,000 people found 27 per cent are regular users with the average plastic bottle drinker buying five per month.

Yet 22 per cent believe water from a plastic bottle isn’t good for their health, with 33 per cent claiming tap water is ‘purer’ in comparison.

Despite this, 47 per cent don’t give much thought to the damage it could have on their physical condition when needing to buy a drink on the go.

The study was commissioned by reusable bottle brand, Ocean Bottle, which has released Acqua Sordida, a water bottle visibly filled with ‘bits’ to represent the microplastics in our waterways – to encourage the UK to end its toxic relationship with plastic bottles.
