He was knocked off his bike and left unconscious on the ground with severe head, chest and pelvic injuries yesterday.

A “green light” alert was activated and a police escort was provided to rush the man to the hospital soon after the horror incident.

It is understood the Brit had been trying to cross a motorway near the seaside resort of Cala Major overlooking the Bay of Palma – an area off-limits to cyclists.

Cops soon launched an investigation into the accident, but so far have not been able to confirm who was at fault.

Majorca remains a hugely popular destination for both amateur and professional cyclists.

The roads on the island are often packed with cycling groups who like to ride on the famous Tramuntana mountains along the west side of the island.

In March 2016, Scots tourist Graeme McGilvray, 49, from Glasgow, died in an accident at a roundabout on a busy road between Alcudia and Port Alcudia after being knocked off his bike by a lorry

Last September another Brit cyclist was seriously injured after being hit by a lorry on the island.

He fell more than 30ft down an embankment at the side of the road after being run over.

Emergency responders reported at the time he had suffered “very serious” head, chest and stomach injuries as they rushed him to hospital.

That incident happened near Caimiri, a small inland town in Majorca at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains which is famous for its olives.
