League One goalkeeper, 23, missed out on life-changing Man Utd transfer after failing TWO medicals

SHREWSBURY keeper Toby Savin missed out on a dream move to Manchester United — because he twice failed a medical at Old Trafford.

The stopper, 23, was United’s preferred option to be their third choice as veteran Tom Heaton heads for a coaching position and Nathan Bishop moved to Sunderland last year.

Savin was at League Two Accrington Stanley when he failed his first medical in January, having been watched by scouts from United, Newcastle and Tottenham over the past three seasons.

He left Accrington at the end of the season and would have joined United on a free but he failed a second medical this month.

Savin suffered a shoulder injury last season which limited him to just nine appearances for Accrington.

But Shrewsbury decided his injury was not a big enough problem and he signed a two-year contract with the club last month.

Shrews boss Paul Hurst said after his arrival: “Toby attracted interest from clubs higher up the leagues.

“He is a player with plenty of potential and has all the attributes to be a really good goalkeeper.

“Our job is to make sure he fulfils that and becomes the best version of himself.”

United have ramped up their transfer activity and confirmed the signing of wonderkid Leny Yoro this week.

MAN UTD TRANSFER NEWS LIVE: All the latest deals and rumours from Old Trafford

SunSport exclusively revealed the club now face a battle to get Aussie whizkid James Overy registered and his transfer cleared.

The right-back has been offered a deal at Old Trafford, as we first revealed, and he and his family have found a house in a Cheshire suburb favoured by top players.

Overy has not been able to play for United while the Premier League and Fifa both look at his transfer.

The defender joined non-league side Newton Abbot Spurs in March when his family moved from Perth to England to live.

And under Fifa rules, the teenager was not allowed to join any other club within 16 weeks as this would be regarded as a ‘bridge transfer’.

United tried to sign Overy within that period and the agreement is now being delayed although they had no history with the player before he came on trial.
