Drivers have been warned they face disruption on some of the UK’s busiest roads starting from tonight.

Sections of the M25, M4 and M1 will be closed for planned roadworks, including the main bridge connecting England and Wales.

Most of the closures will take place overnight, when the roads are quieter.

Highways England warned motorists driving after 8pm and earlier than 6am that they could be caught up in the diversions, however.

So if your journey takes you along these routes, it might be time to consider staying at home instead or at least leaving extra time for the journey.

Which motorways will be closed?

The M1 southbound will be closed completely from Junction 31 to Junction 30 from 8pm tonight until 6am on Monday. Surrounding slip roads will also be closed.

Both directions of the M25 London ring road will see disruption, as part of works which have been ongoing.

Although there won’t be closures lasting the full weekend as there have been previously, there will still be major restrictions.

For example, the clockwise carriageway will be closed from Junction 8 to Junction 9. tonight and the Junction 27 link road to M11 Southbound Junction 6 will also be closed on both sides of the carriageway.

Roadworks will continue here throughout the week, in different areas. For example, the clockwise carriageway between Junction 20 to Junction 21 will be closed between 10pm on July 23 and 5.30am the next day.

The M60 Manchester ring road will be closed anticlockwise Junction 5 to Junction 4 from 9pm until 5am tonight.

The M4 will see major disruption for three nights starting from Tuesday, when the Prince of Wales Bridge over the River Severn will be closed eastbound from Junction 23 to Junction 22 between 8pm (9pm on Tuesday) and 6am.
