Pakistani officials have reported the ninth case of polio in Balochistan province since March 2024.

Malik Mukhtar Ahmad, Prime Minister of Pakistan’s Coordinator for Health Services, announced on Sunday, July 21, that a new polio case was identified in an 18-month-old child in the Zhob district of Balochistan.

He described the identification of this seventh polio case in Balochistan as “very concerning” and called for high-quality vaccination campaigns in the province.

With this case, the total number of polio cases identified across the country has reached nine.

The National Health Service of Pakistan has also highlighted the rise in polio cases as a significant challenge, stressing that it reflects the failure to eradicate the disease effectively.

Previously, Pakistani authorities had reported several polio cases in the provinces of Balochistan, Quetta, and Sindh.

Pakistan and Afghanistan remain the only countries in the world where polio has not been eradicated. The persistence of this disease in these regions underscores the critical need for continued and intensified vaccination efforts to eliminate it globally.
