The Afghanistan Ministry of Finance has announced an increase in customs tariffs on certain imported goods to support local production.

In a statement released on Sunday, July 21, the ministry explained that this decision was made during the second tariff committee meeting of the current solar year. The ministry’s statement indicated that national tariff codes will also be established to facilitate customs activities.

According to the new decision, the tariffs for several items will be raised as follows: tariffs on “pasta and macaroni” will increase from 20% to 25%, “potato chips” from 30% to 50%, “paint” from 10% and 6.5% to 16%, “preform bottles” from 2.5% to 6.5%, and “paper towels” from 5% to 10%.

Additionally, the ministry reported increases in tariffs for “non-corrugated cartons and boxes” from 16% to 40%, “shoes” from 5% to 10%, “evaporative coolers” from 5% to 10%, “ceramic ware” from 5% to 16%, “raw spice materials” from 5.5% to 25%, and “beverage powder” from 10% to 30%.

This increase in tariffs is intended to boost domestic industries and encourage local production. However, some traders in the country have expressed concerns about the higher customs duties, the lack of appropriate markets, and increased taxes, arguing that these measures could negatively impact their businesses and the overall economic environment.
