Independent Joe Manchin considering re-registering as Democrat to challenge Harris: report

Sen. Joe Manchin (I-W. VA) is considering challenging Kamala Harris for the nomination, according to multiple news reports.

President Joe Biden announced earlier on Sunday that he would "stand down" from his campaign, ultimately endorsing his vice president, Kamala Harris, as the next U.S. president. That led Trump to whine, and attempt to change the terms of an upcoming debate.

Much of the Democratic party has already endorsed Harris for the role, but Manchin has other plans, according to CNN's Jake Tapper.

"Sources close to Sen Joe Manchin, independent of WV, say he's considering re-registering as a Democrat and throwing his hat into the ring," Tapper wrote Sunday.

Stephen Neukam of Axios later confirmed that report.

"Independent Sen. Joe Manchin is considering re-registering as a Democrat and entering the presidential race, a source familiar tells me," Neukam said.
