Back-to-back yellow weather warnings, high fire risk

The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for high temperatures on Monday valid from 11am until 5pm. A previous warning for high overnight temperatures expires at 8am.

The weather will be mostly clear with increased low cloud at times. Temperatures will rise to 42C in the interior, 34C on the west coast, 38C on the remaining coasts, and 32C in the higher mountains. Winds will be mainly south-to north-westerly, weak to moderate, up to 4 Beaufort, and in the afternoon up to strong, 5 Beaufort. The sea will be rough.

Overnight will be mostly clear with increased low clouds on the coasts. During the evening and morning hours, light mist or fog may form, especially in the southeast. Temperatures will drop to 27C in the interior, 24C on the western coast, 26C on the remaining coasts, and 22C in the higher mountains. Winds will be mainly south-to north-westerly, and later locally turning north-easterly, light to moderate, up to 4 Beaufort and gradually abating. The sea will remain somewhat rough.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with remain mainly clear with some low clouds in the mountains and a chance of brief isolated rains.

Temperatures are expected to continue well above average for the season with a slight dip expected on on Thursday.

The risk of forest fires remains on red alert with the forestry department issuing a reminder that the lighting of a fire without a permit is prohibited and punishable by imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50,000 or both. Lighting of a fire for preparing food is only allowed in the fire pits of designated picnic areas.

The department has issued a strong appeal to the public to exercise heightened caution and refrain from risky activities and use of tools or agricultural machinery that generates heat, sparks, or flames, such as electric saws, welding equipment, and electric welders.

If members of the public observe any smoke or fire, they are urged to immediately contact the forestry department at 1407 or the fire service at 112.
