Sports briefs: Pacifics settle for split after wild walk-off loss to Martinez

The San Rafael Pacifics climbed out of an early, eight-run hole but surrendered three runs in the bottom of the ninth in a 15-14 road loss to the Martinez Sturgeon on Sunday.

San Rafael (30-19 Pecos League) got three hits, two homers, six RBIs, and three runs scored from Blake Diggle. Mark Hernandez also had three hits, adding three RBIs and two runs. Hernandez and John Bicos both hit home runs.

San Rafael climbed back into the game with a five-run fifth after Martinez (19-28) took an 8-0 lead through four innings. The Pacifics tied the game at 9-9 with a four-run sixth before briefly taking leads in the seventh and ninth innings.

San Rafael scored three times in the top of the ninth to go in front 14-12.

The Pacifics also staged a late rally against Martinez on Saturday — one that resulted in a 10-8 victory in 10 innings. San Rafael needed to score a run in the ninth to get to extra innings then Nick Smith drove in a pair of runs with a bases-loaded single for a 10-8 lead.

Xavier Stewart pitched two hitless innings in the ninth and 10th to earn the victory.

San Rafael begins the final week of the season with a home game against Marysville on Tuesday followed by a road game at Marysville on Wednesday. The regular season ends with a road game against Martinez on Sunday.

Golf

Greenbrae’s Arjun Aujla held on to win the championship flight of the San Rafael City Championship at Peacock Gap Golf Course on Sunday.

Aujla, a former Redwood High standout who plays for the University of Rochester, shot a 63 on Saturday followed by a 73 on Sunday to go 6-under par over 72 holes and win by a single stroke.

Ben Gould and Nick Fry shot 5-under par to tie for second. Mario Paoletti and Mason Browning tied for fourth by shooting even par.

The men’s net flight was won by Matthew Regier, who shot an even-par 142 over the weekend. Gary Lorin took the Senior Championship with a 2-over 144. Mike Ritthaler won the senior’s men’s net flight with a 3-under 139. Eva Denten won the women’s net flight with a 4-over 146.
