Just as we thought it might already be over, blistering summer weather is set to return to the UK this week.

Temperatures plunged over the weekend as the skies filled with dark, gloomy clouds and rain fell in some areas.

Conditions were a stark comparison to the baking 31°C felt in parts of the country on the hottest day of the year on Friday.

But before we’ve even had a chance to cool down, the warm weather is on its way back with almost perfect timing as the school summer holidays get into full swing

Monday is expected to continue in a similar vein to the last two days with some rain moving in from the west, affecting the north of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

The south will stay largely dry, however, and by Tuesday temperatures will start to climb towards highs of 27°C, continuing into Wednesday too.

Blue skies and sunshine may be relatively short-lived, though, according to the Met Office which says Thursday is expected to be wet before things settle down again going into next weekend.

Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell said: ‘It won’t be wall-to-wall sunshine and we’ll see rain in the north on Monday and the rest of the country on Thursday.

‘It also won’t be as hot as recent days but warmer than the start to July. It will be an improvement.

‘Overall, the south east and south are likely to see the warmest temperatures next week.’

Thousands of Brits flocked to the beach last week as a mini-heatwave swept through large swathes of the country.

A yellow heat health alert was even put in place after summer finally arrived at long, long last following weeks on end of miserable weather.

The hottest temperature recorded was 31.9°C at St James’ Park in central London on Friday – the warmest day of 2024 so far.

We might not reach those dizzy heights this week but at least there’s some semblance of summer to speak of.

And maybe we will finally get to see that long-awaited London hot air balloon regatta after it was cancelled on Sunday yet again.
