Ajit Agarkar reveals why Suryakumar Yadav was made T20I captain over Hardik Pandya

During a press conference, Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir let in an insight as to why Suryakumar Yadav was selected to captain the Indian side in the T20I series against Sri Lanka while Hardik Pandya, who was the vice-captain of the Indian side that won the T20 World Cup last month, was ignored. Agarkar hinted that Pandya not getting chosen as the captain was due to his fitness concerns.

“As far as Hardik is concerned, fitness has been something that he’s struggled with. As selectors, it becomes difficult then. The thought behind it was that we want someone (as captain) who is likely to be available more,” said Agarkar.

“He (Pandya) is still a very important player. And that’s what we want him to be, those skillsets are hard to find,” added Agarkar.

Even though Pandya played a key role in India’s T20 World Cup triumph, Agarkar insisted that Suryakumar is the right choice for captaincy in T20Is.

“He (Suryakumar Yadav) is a deserving candidate. He has been a great batter for us. We feel that Surya has all the necessary qualities to be a good captain,” said Agarkar.
