Man Utd now prepared to sign £51m Euro 2024 winner, waiting for green light from player - report
Manchester United are prepared to sign one of Spain’s most influential players at Euro 2024, according to today’s edition of Sport (page 3).
The Red Devils have already bolstered their squad with striker Joshua Zirkzee and centre-back Leny Yoro and they are currently in talks to sign midfielder Manuel Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain.
The club also seem open to signing another versatile forward and Sport claim that the Red Devils would be prepared to bring Olmo to Old Trafford ‘automatically’ if they could this summer.
Chelsea and Manchester City are also credited with an interest in the 26-year-old, but the Spain international is presently ‘holding on’, trusting that Barcelona will make an offer for him.
It is reported that Olmo could consider an alternate option if he grows tired of waiting for them.
United should avoid approach for Olmo due to injury record
Olmo had another injury-plagued campaign at Leipzig. He registered eight goals and five assists from just 25 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga giants.
He went on to star for La Roja at the European Championship. Olmo was initially a substitute for them, but became an important figure in the XI after Pedri’s injury setback.
The Spaniard scored three goals and provided two assists at the tournament. He played as an attacking midfielder in five games with a solitary appearance on the left wing.
Olmo can also operate on the right side of the attack or as a false number nine. He is a perfect player to have in the squad with his versatility, chance creation and goal threat.
However, his injury record suggests that United should stay away from an approach. He was sidelined for 29 games for club and country during the recent campaign.
Olmo also missed 20 games and 19 games respectively in the two seasons prior to that. This is a huge warning sign and the Red Devils should avoid making a move.
His £60 million release clause at Leipzig expired on Saturday. The German club are bound to demand a much higher fee to consider his departure in the coming days.
While Olmo has the talent, it does not appear worthwhile to pay such a price, considering his injury woes.
United have had a similar problem with Mason Mount, who had an injury hit debut season. They can’t risk spending such a huge amount on another injury-plagued star.
