Series of illegalities uncovered on Pervolia beaches

Inspections carried out at beaches in Pervolia by officers of the environmental commissioner’s office on July 8 unveiled a series of violations, the office said on Monday.

The inspections, which saw the participation of representatives from local authorities and residents, highlighted various concerns about the coastal area within the administrative boundaries of Pervolia.

One major issue identified was the mechanical movement and stacking of pebbles along the eastern side of Faros beach, a practice that involved relocating the pebbles 10-20 metres inland from the shoreline to expose the sandy beach substrate.

“This alteration aimed to create a sandy beach but raised environmental concerns,” a statement released by the environmental commissioner’s office said.

Additionally, the presence of unauthorised structures operating as bars on the beach was also noticed. Three such establishments were found at Faros beaach and one at Ammos beach.

“These bars were equipped with seating, electrical refrigerators, and were selling alcoholic beverages. The use of private generators to power these bars on public beaches was also flagged as an issue, along with the public nuisance and noise pollution caused by loud music played during nighttime hours,” the statement continued.

Moreover, during the inspection at Faros beach, officers of the environmental commissioner office noticed the presence of a cycling and walking path parallel to the beach, when, in fact, the plan handed to the municipality provided for a road designated for vehicle access, including ambulances and vehicles for the disabled.

The inspection team also found an entry barrier next to the beach open, “facilitating illegal access and movement of private motor vehicles on the beach, posing safety risks to beachgoers”.

On top of that, at Ammos beach, officers found evidence of illegal vehicle entry and movement through an open passage between the beach and the public road. Inspectors found deep tyre marks on the sand, indicating regular use by motor vehicles, which contravenes the laws on beach protection.

The absence of lifeguard towers was another significant concern. Despite the beach usage plans for Faros and Ammos beaches including provisions for the construction of lifeguard towers, none were present.

“There were no lifeguards on duty, despite the beaches being organised with sunbeds and umbrellas, raising safety concerns for beach visitors,” the statement said.

Following the visit, a letter was sent on July 15 to the municipalities of Dromolaxia, Meneou, Kiti, Pervolia, and Tersefanou, under which the Pervolia community authority falls.

The letter, also addressed to other relevant services, detailed the issues found and posed questions regarding the procedures followed by various services in issuing related permits, approvals and licences.

“The environmental commissioner’s office is awaiting responses from the local authority and other services to address the concerns raised,” the statement said.

“Once all relevant data is reviewed, further actions will be taken within the office’s jurisdiction to ensure compliance and address the environmental and safety issues identified during the inspection.”
