Fires in Limassol district

Two fires were raging out of control in Limassol, burning land at the Akrotiri marshes and wild vegetation between Pachna and Avdimou on Monday afternoon.

Fire services spokesman Andreas Kettis said there were five firefighting vehicles on site to combat the raging flames between the Pachna and Avdimou communities.

Four firefighting aircraft are also on site, with strong winds hampering the efforts.

An additional two mobile units from the game fund, a truck from Limassol’s district office and a firefighting vehicle from the Support CY Ngo.

A mobile unit from the Anogira community got caught up in the flames, as firefighters had to abandon the vehicle when it wouldn’t start.

Kettis said staff were unharmed.

Meanwhile, the British bases said the fire at the marshes area broke out northwest of the site with firefighting services from the forestry department and bases trying to put the flames under control.
