CHELSEA, Manhattan (PIX11) -- A former prison in Manhattan that has been shut down since 2012 might finally be repurposed.

The Bayview Correctional Facility on West 20th Street could be converted into 124 affordable housing units, Governor Kathy Hochul announced Monday.

The proposed project, titled Liberty Landing, was selected after Hochul called for proposals to transform the 100,000 square-foot facility into affordable and supportive housing in September 2023.

The joint venture between the Camber Property Group and the Osborne Association will also offer supportive housing for formerly incarcerated individuals reentering the community.

In addition to building affordable housing units, the proposal includes a community facility unit for youth-oriented programming, and a 15-unit short-term transitional residence to support individuals with mental health needs who are navigating life transitions and are in need of temporary housing.

The project will undergo review according to the State Environmental Quality Review Act. It will then be presented for public review and comment before final approval. and be presented for public review and comment before its final consideration and approval.
