Manos de Cristo's Back to School Program returns

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Non-profit organization Manos de Cristo prepared 2,000 low-income children for this upcoming school year.

Their annual back to school event kicked off Monday July 22 and will continue until July 26. The location for the event is Midtown Church in Austin.

Children in the program who attended today's event each received a back to school backpack filled with essentials. The backpacks included clothing, undergarments' and socks. This was all possible thanks to private donors and Austin area Presbyterian Churches

The program is specifically for students in Pre-K through fifth grade and each child must be present to participate.

Program volunteers are onsite to help students pick their clothing and backpacks.

Each parent or guardian should be prepared to show an ID and have the child's clothing size, name of school and grade ready to show to the volunteers.

Estimate of how much it cost to send a child to school in 2023

According to the Manos de Cristo organization, in 2023 it cost an estimate of about $597 to send one child to school. In 2024, inflation rates continue to stay high making it nearly impossible for low-income families to send their little ones to school.

In order for Manos de Cristo to continue helping these local families each year they depend on donations. For more details on how you can help visit their website.
