Ryan Reynolds Reveals Why His Daughter With Blake Lively Wanted to ‘Kill’ Them & It’ll Make You Feel Seen
Being loved by your kids is the greatest feeling in the world. Until they turn on you. Maybe it happens after you put them in time out or grounded them, or maybe they just woke up and chose chaos. Or, they might decide they hate you because you had the audacity to do something so vile, so cruel, so selfish, that they had no other choice. The latter is exactly why Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively’s eldest daughter James, 9, got mad at her parents recently. The Deadpool actor recently revealed why James wanted to “kill” him and Lively, and parents everywhere will feel seen.
Reynolds, who shares also shares Inez, 7, Betty, 4, and another child born in 2023, with Lively, appeared on Monday’s episode of Live with Kelly and Mark, where he shared the reason James got so upset with her mom and dad. “We went on a date the other night and our oldest was going to kill us,” Reynolds said, per PEOPLE. “Just for going on a date; just for tending to the relationship.”
Oh man, been there! Whether they are babies crying the whole time the babysitter’s there or elementary-aged kids trying to guilt trip you into not leaving the house, kids getting indignant about date nights is (unfortunately) par for the course in this whole parenting thing. It’s nice to see even celebrities go through the same thing.
Reynolds and Lively didn’t let their kids stop them, although they were still a big part of the date night. “And we did, and what’s crazy is, the whole time we’re there, we just talked about [our kids],” Reynolds said, “When you think you’re going to be talking about [something else].” Yep! It turns out every parent is the same because that’s exactly how dates with my husband go, too.
When they went on their date, however, they did not ask their friend Taylor Swift to watch the kids (though we hear she’s actually a fabulous babysitter!). In an interview with E! News today, Reynolds’ Deadpool & Wolverine co-star Hugh Jackman joked that the “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart” singer was their sitter, but Reynolds quickly shot down the claim.
“The cost of that is …” Reynolds joked. “I believe the accountant said, ‘Cost-prohibitive.’ But I think what he meant was, ‘Cost-insane-what-are-you-doing-I’m-no-longer-your-accountant.’”
Still, that doesn’t stop the couple from taking time for themselves. The It Ends With Us star recently showed some love to her husband on Instagram, where she shared a picture of herself smooching Reynolds when he was dressed up like Deadpool. “Brb I’m buying milky pens to write your name on my hand @vancityreynolds,” Lively captioned her post, praising her husband and all the ways he incorporated her millennial love into his movies.
“My y2k girlies,” she continued, “I should be competitive bc @itendswithusmovie is coming out in 3 weeks BUT when your middle school obsessions, your feelings post baby, or about Nice men who use feminism as a tool, your love of the Wizard of Oz, Succession, Sandy & Danny, driving with Avril blasting, the way the choreography of a certain boy*band song got me, of Baz Luhrmann fireworks to punctuate a moment, even down to the fact that our hair color is determined by seasons and the French method by which it’s painted are all so seen… MY WORD… it’s hard not to encourage my ladies to spot all the ways we’ve influenced @deadpoolmovie.”
“I’ve never been more proud. And I’ve given birth 4 times. ???? ❤️????” she jokingly added.
Lively also shared a clip of some of these iconic moments. “Tell me Deadpool’s married to a millennial girl in real life without telling me,” she says, before cutting to a bunch of clips of Deadpool. One shows him listening to Avril Lavigne in a car chase scene, joking about Harry Potter, quoting Frozen, dancing to Celine Dion and *NYSNC, referencing Sabrina the Teenage Witch and My Little Pony, and even knowing the term “summer bayalage.” Our hearts are melted!
Sorry, James: your mama is down bad for her man, and it’s not likely that they’ll cut back on date nights any time soon! Don’t worry, you’ll understand one day!
