Anne Hathaway Might Be Holding out on 'The Devil Wears Prada' Sequel for a Wise Reason

Fans got excited in early July when a Puck News report revealed that a sequel to the 2006 hit, The Devil Wears Prada, was in the works. The plot would reunite Meryl Streep’s iconic character, Miranda Priestly, with her former assistant, Emily Charlton, played by Emily Blunt, as their career paths crossed again years later.

Where does that leave co-star Anne Hathaway? Well, that part was left unclear by the plot synopsis, but she’s reportedly game for reprising her role as Andy Sachs — under one condition. “Disney is intent on reuniting Anne, Meryl Steep, and Emily Blunt but they’re going to find that Anne is going to be the hold-out, because she simply holds this property to a very high standard and because she needs to be compensated properly as the only true romantic comedy specialist in the cast,” a movie insider told Life & Style.

Hathaway reportedly wants more than “an extended cameo,” per the source, she believes “the part needs to be substantial, and the paycheck needs to be in the eight-figure range.” Fair enough, she’s an Oscar winner and has more than proven her worth in Hollywood. We wouldn’t be surprised if Streep and Blunt also ask for top dollar since the plot seems to revolve around their two characters. According to Puck News, Miranda, near the end of her career, is “forced to go head-to-head with her former assistant, now a high-powered executive at a Kering or LVMH-style luxury group, whose advertising dollars [she] desperately needs.”

There’s no mention of Andy in the logline, but it seems crazy that Hathaway’s character would be completely omitted from the plot. Her character left the fashion industry at the end of the first movie, but there has to be a way to bring her back into the fashion fold. A sequel to The Devil Wears Prada wouldn’t be complete without Hathaway in the mix. The 41-year-old actress joked to EW about how she was the “ninth choice” for the role after Rachel McAdams turned down the movie “three times.”

“I patiently waited until it was my turn, and I got the call. It was the easiest yes in the world. I remember the moment I found out I got the part, I just ran screaming through my apartment,” Hathaway shared with the outlet for the movie’s 15th anniversary in 2021. “I had a bunch of friends over at the time, I just jumped up in the living room and screamed, ‘I’m going to be in The Devil Wears Prada!’”

Now, Disney just has to get rolling with the contracts because Hathaway seems to be “perfectly prepared to hunker down in a negotiation over the next few months” to make The Devil Wears Prada 2 happen. Let’s get that sequel rolling!
