‘It felt brand new’ admits LeBron James after returning to city of last Olympic triumph and being named USA flag bearer

LEBRON James felt like a new man in London after a memorable few days in the city he last won Olympic gold.

The NBA superstar, 39, is bidding to win his third gold medal in Paris this summer when the games begin on Friday.

He joined his USA basketball teammates in the United Kingdom over the past few days for some last-minute fine-tuning.

James proved he’s still the leader of the team with his 23-point performance against South Sudan on Saturday.

He hit a last-gasp lay-up to help the US overcome South Sudan in a hard-fought 101-100 victory.

And he followed up with 20 points in USA’s 92-88 win over Germany two days later.

On both occasions in London he led the team in scoring and made key plays to turn the tide in America’s favor in the fourth quarter.

On Monday James was also named a USA flag bearer for Friday’s Paris 2024 Olympic opening ceremony.

And, after leading the American contingent in the opening ceremony, he will kickstart his bid for a third gold medal.

James was part of the side that won at Beijing 2008 and at London 2012.

The latter competition took place at the O2 Arena – where USA just played their final two warm-up games.

“I didn’t have any flashbacks,” James said.

“It was kind of like it was brand new because it was 12 years ago when I was here.

“It’s always great to be back in the UK, playing the game I love and representing Team USA.

“And in front of fans who appreciate the game of basketball and appreciate what I’ve been able to do in my life and career.

“Being back at The O2 Arena is always a pleasure.

“There are so many great acts here, not just sports but also in entertainment.

“It’s a great place to come and perform and be part of that legacy.”

James became the first basketball player in US Olympic history to be named a flag bearer.

“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially in a moment that can bring the whole world together,” James said.

“For a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only myself, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians and so many people across the country with big aspirations.

“Sports have the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”

USA will face Serbia in their first game at the Olympics on July 28.

The group stage of the basketball tournament is being played in Lille before it shifts to Paris for the finals.
