Van Jones reveals why he thinks TikTok has ‘remixed’ Kamala Harris ‘from cringe to cool’
An onslaught of coconut references and filtered fan cams have driven a positive shift in Kamala Harris’ public perception just one day into her presidential campaign, CNN’s Van Jones said Monday night.
“My hottest take is that because of TikTok, Kamala has gone from cringe to cool in 24 hours,” Jones said. “All of the stuff we used to make fun of her for, the kids have remixed it.”
A year ago, Harris was openly mocked for saying, “You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?” during a May 2023 swearing-in ceremony. But the coconut is now on the other foot, as TikTok users flooded the site with a flurry of memes building up Harris in the aftermath of President Joe Biden’s departure from the presidential race.
“There’s something going on, I think that Twitter for Trump in 2016 is going to be the same as TikTok for Kamala in this thing,” Jones speculated. “I think Kamala is going to own TikTok.”

On X, user @JoePostingg noted how fast the memes have taken over the Chinese-owned video app.
"My TikTok feed is covered in Kamala fancams," he noted in a thread on X. "I've never seen anything like this."
Popstar Kesha jumped on the Kamala bandwagon, posting a short dance video with a voiceover of Harris' infamous coconut quote.
